How retrofit solar works
A retrofit solar system wraps a flexible photovoltaic array vertically around the pole itself, rather than mounting a panel on a separate frame. The battery and controller sit inside the assembly. The fixture on top is a standard LED luminaire. Three things follow from that design.
The existing pole stays
Arrays are made to band onto poles already in the ground, in aluminum, steel, wood, or composite, and in round, square, or tapered profiles. Where the pole is sound, the pole stays.
No trenching, no new service
The system generates and stores its own power. There is no conduit run, no panel upgrade, and no coordination with the utility for a new connection.
The vertical wrap sheds weather
A panel lying flat collects dust, leaves, and snow, and needs cleaning to keep producing. A vertical array does not hold debris the same way, which matters in a climate with real winters.

An off-grid fixture draws nothing from the meter. For a lot running lights every night of the year, that is a recurring cost removed rather than reduced.
Lighting that survives an outage
Grid-connected lighting goes dark when the grid does, which is precisely when a property is most exposed. A system with its own storage keeps running. Systems are available with enough reserve to hold through several consecutive days without meaningful sun.
A safety improvement without construction
Better lit lots are easier to insure, easier to lease, and easier to defend if something happens. The retrofit approach means that improvement does not come with weeks of disruption.
Progressive coverage
Because each pole is independent, a property can light the worst corner first and extend later. There is no single circuit to design around and no reason to do the whole lot at once.

Solar lighting is not right for every lot. Heavy tree cover, north-facing obstructions, and poles in poor structural condition all change the answer, and some sites are better served by conventional lighting or a grid-tied hybrid.
